Taj Mahal Legends: Were the workers of Taj Mahal mutiliated?

 
 
It is said that Shah Jahan while commissioning the work on the Taj Mahal wanted no other building as splendid and magnificent as the Taj. Proofs point towards the fact that a spectacular temple palace already existed before Shah Jahan's time and he only got it further renovated and converted to an Islamic monument. His scope of work possibly included cladding the marble, as records show that the initial palace was made of red stone. Other works being inlay work (pic below), carving the

  Koranic verses and other calligraphy art. However, even for this, a huge number of artisans and artists were required to decorate a monument as majestic as the Taj Mahal. Legend says that the emperor got the hands of all the craftsmen and artisans cut off, so as to ensure no one could make a replica. The story of the mutiliations also go on to say that eyes were also pulled out so no one could ever imagine building something even remotely close to the beauty of the Taj Mahal. However, there is absolutely no reference in any historic journal about this.
