Taj Mahal Legends: Is the Taj Mahal sinking? |
|
| |
The legends and myths associated with the Taj Mahal are plenty. So, is the Taj really sinking? No, say experts. But there is a potential danger to this wondrous monument if the River Yamuna dries up. The structure stands on a wooden base on the banks of the Yamuna. Shah Jahan used only the finest quality ebony and got all the designs just right for it to last forever. The only thing he may not have considered was the drying up of the might River Yamuna over the centuries. Like all wood types, even ebony needs a constant supply of moisture to keep it from shrinking and to prevent cracks and fissures. If the Yamuna does dry up, it can potentially cause the base to wobble.

The river bed of the Yamuna has always protected the monument by absorbing all tectonic shocks and keeping the wooden base intact. However, if the bed does dry up, it will expose the monument to natural elements. The minarets have aready been showing a visible tilt and corrective action needs to be implemented by the Archaelogical Survey of India.
