Taj Mahal Legends: Was it built by an Italian? |
|
| |
Like so many other legends, another mystery that surrounds the Taj Mahal is that of its architect and builder's origin. It is believed in many circles that the Taj was designed by an Italian by the name of Geronimo Veroneo. How much credence should be given to this theory is another matter. But the fact that this theory exists is reason enough to go to depths and find out its validity. This was propagated by a Spanish monk by the name of Father Sebastian Manrique, an Augustinian Friar, who had come to India to secure the release of Father Antony who was being held as a prisoner by the Mughals in Lahore.

It is said that when he came to India, he met with the executor of Geronimo, named Father Joseph De Castro in Lahore. It was Castro who told Father Sebastian about a famous Venetian jeweler who came to India in the Portuguese ships but died on his way in Lahore and was later buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery Padres Santos in Agra.
