The Mughals have given us architectural gems, amongst which is the Taj Mahal standing out as one of the marvels that has stood the test of time as far as beauty and appeal go. This is no easy feat and the Mughals should be given due credit for all the detail and attention that was given to the architecture and design of the Taj. Even the smallest areas had design elements like the "guldastas" that flank the exterior of the Taj. "Guldastas" is the Urdu terminology for the flower topped pinnacles that rise from the main sides of the structure. These "guldastas" are not originally Mughal, but were an integral part of the Sayed and Lodi architecture. They were added to the Taj Mahal purely for beauty and lends the building a sense of height. Their existance unlike many other design features has no religious connotations. Decorated with lotus petals, the guldastas are topped with gold finials.
