The summit of the gold gilded finial perched at almost 220 feet from the ground, gives a finishing look to the Taj Mahal. The motif is a Hindu symbol with bent lotus leaves mounted on a "kalash" with a coconut on top. Most Hindu Puja ceremonies and rituals take place with this arrangement of the kalash. This finial gives credence to the theory that the Taj Mahal was initially a Hindu temple palace and was usurped by Shah Jahan and redecorated with Koranic verses to convert it to Mumtaz Mahal's tomb. Below are some close up shots of the gold finial standing proud on the summit of the dome of the Taj.
