The decoration of the Taj Mahal is one of the most exclusive and stands out unparalleled amongst other Mughal architecture of those times. Not just an artistic bent but a scientific approach was also taken while inscribing the Koranic texts and other motifs. A lot of importance was given on the fact that the inscriptions on the top of the arches be as readable as the text on the bottom. So, as one's eyes move from the bottom to the top, the illusion effect ensures that the text size looks the same (picture below).

Decorations are used applying paint, inlay work, stucco and carvings. Other than floral motifs, stylized vines, fruits and geometrical patterns, a lot of Koranic verses have been inscribed on the exterior areas (picture above) all around the Taj complex. All the exterior areas inlcuding the minarets, the dome, the plinth, the mosque, the rest house and the gateway are decorated with intricate decorative motifs that stand out against the polished white marble claddings.
