Taj Mahal - Drum

The onion shaped dome of the Taj Mahal sits on a massive drum that not only adds support to the circular top, but also accentuates its look manifold. An actual understanding of how colossal the entire dome and drum is, can be understood from the fact that the total height from the base of the drum to the finial is an astonishing 158 feet! The cylindrical drum itself is about 7 metres or 23 feet high. The drum is also intricately designed with superb inlay work. Such is the beauty of the work that from a distance it seems as if the base of the dome has a bejeweled necklace (see pictures below).
