The "Chattris" are an irreplacable part of the Taj Mahal architecture and give the monument a beautiful Rajputana and Bundela touch. Chattris were an integral part of the Rajput architecture and mostly all temples and palaces of olden times have them. The most prominent are the main four chattris, which flank the four corners of the onion dome. Having an octagonal base, with small arches on each of the eight sides, the chattris boast of a domed top. The top is nicely finished with an inverted lotus with a gold finial rising from its summit. A closer look shows that these "chattris" are present at the tops of the four tall minarets. Here too, they have an octagonal base with arches on sides and built of white marble.
